Petworth Park Camp, 30th April-2nd May 2005
This was the first camp of the season and was held (as usual) at Petworth Park over the Mayday Bank Holiday. This is a district scout and guide activity camp and was attended by over 200 guides and scouts. We were part of the 'Olympians' sub-camp (together with Chanctonbury Rangers, Storrington & Sullington Scouts, Fittleworth Scouts and Fittleworth Guides, Plaistow Guides and Ashington Scouts). Although we had a little drizzle as we pitched camp, we had sunshine for a lot of the time.
As well as winning First Place in the Camp Standards Competition, we were also awarded our certificate for the (previously held) Junior Hike 2005.
On Saturday morning we arrived in sunshine and put our tent erecting skills into practice, together with some of the Mums and Dads who stayed to help. This year we had a lot of girls and not as much space as in previous years, so care had to be taken as to where all the guy ropes ran. Following the opening ceremony, we sat down for lunch before starting the afternoon events based around a mini-Olympics. These included: Discus; Javelin;
Relay Race; and Tug-of-War. In the evening, we had a barbeque and more games before eventually going to bed.
Sunday was the main events day, and we could choose from a long list of activities including Abseiling; Archery; Beach Volleyball; Boomerangs; Canoeing; Laser Clay Shooting; Magical Mystery Tour; 'Pyromania'; Radio Ham; Rifle Shooting; Scalextric; and Sweetmaking. All took place in brilliant sunshine as could be noted from the mild sunburn!
We finished the day with a campfire.
Monday morning started off with breakfast, and then we had to began 'striking camp'. Unfortunately, a little light rain meant that everything got slightly wet! We also celebrated a birthday with birthday cake and biscuits before going home for a well deserved warm bath!
