Petworth Park Camp
1st - 3rd May 2010
Over the last few years, we have really been lucky with the weather, and this weekend started well, if a little cool. Some of the leaders set up on the Friday and stayed overnight so that the marquee was ready for use when we arrived.
As over 300 scouts and guides arrived, we put up our tents and moved in. As usual we had all brought far too much but we managed to get it all stowed away. After lunch it was time for the Incident and Challenge Race. We were able to have a go with some Zorb balls which was terrific fun. After tea and well into the evening we played different wide games.
Sunday was the main activity day which started cool and overcast with rain arriving in the late morning. It did put a damper on things, but there were many activities to door inside. You can see what we got up to in the photos below, but despite the rain, we enjoyed getting wet in the lake (which some of us claim was warning than the air!)
There were three activity areas:
The lake zone including rafting and kayaking on the lake; a water slide; and a blind trial
The challenge zone included an abseil tower; a climbing tower; an aerial zip-wite; an assault course and ri;fle shooting
The Make & Do zone including circus skills (like juggling); drums; radios; archery; and backwoods cooking. It also include many craft activities including glass and wood etching; candle-making; rope making and sweet-making (very popular).
The rain stopped during the afternoon which meant we could spend the evening at a barbecue.
One of our young leaders celebrated her birthday on the Sunday and was treated to a birthday cake topped off with candles made in the Make & Do zone.
On Monday morning, it was time to strike camp. We were able to get the tents down before a shower soaked the marquee before it could be taken down. We left after the closing ceremony and went home to a long bath and to catch up on some sleep.
A big thank-you to all the organisers and helpers for making this camp a success.
